The weekend is finally here, and what better way to kick it off than defrosting your freezer?

If you own a manual defrost freezer it is essential that you defrost your freezer at least once a year, or when there is more than one fourth of an inch of ice in a large area. This is important as built up ice can be a waste of valuable space in your freezer along with making freezing of food less efficient.

Here is a breakdown of exactly what you need to do to most efficiently and quickly defrost your freezer.

  1. Turn off freezer.
  2. Empty freezer- Throw out products that will not use in the future. And place the rest in freezer bags.
  3. Remove shelves, trays and drawers where possible- Take the time to wipe these down.
  4. Prevent puddles by putting newspapers at the base of the freezer.
  5. Wait for the ice in the freezer to melt. To speed up the process remove some of the loose pieces of ice with a hot cloth
  6. When the freezer has completely melted mop up any water
  7. Clean freezer use this time to clean out and dirt that might have built up since the last time you’ve cleaned it
  8. Dry freezer
  9. Check seal on freezer
  10. Turn freezer back on, returning any food removed.
