A Malaysian woman has turned her hand to making chemical-free cleaning products based on the fruit peel left over from her juicer.

New product invention as described in a recent European Cleaning Journal

Stay-at-home mother of three Jessica Tan Wee Loo hit upon the recipe for enzyme detergents through trial and error and is now marketing them commercially.

Her products are made from sugar and water plus fruit waste from oranges, pineapples, limes, grapefruit and lemons. Tan’s detergents are only ready for use after having been fermented for at least 100 days.

“Enzyme cleaners are chemical-free, biodegradable and gentle on the hands and the environment,” she says. “The cleaners are also natural insect repellents which means they keep ants and cockroaches at bay without harming them.”

She also makes an enzyme cleaner paste using blended fermented fruit peel mixed with baking soda. This scouring cream is designed for use on tough, oily kitchen stains on burned pots, fat fryers and cooker hoods.
